Double page spread analysis
This double
page spread is from a magazine called NME. NME is a magazine which focuses on
rock, indie, alternative music; I focused a lot on this double page spread as
it has elements which I would like to include on my r&b music magazine.
The relationship
between the left and right hand side pages is similar. The first thing we see
is the title which is bold, big and is split across the two sides. The font is
styled in a graffiti format which gives it an edge which is what the magazine
is about. The use of the colour red could represent danger or rebellion; also
it could add a sense of seduction since the model is female and that the
magazine could try to be attracting the male gender. The use of a ‘washed out
and rough’ background connote she is in a place she shouldn't be in which gives
her more a rebellious artist look.
The title of
the double page spread is the name of the singer Rita Ora. She is very well
known singer, and the magazine has not done any introduction to introduce her, they've just gone straight to the interview questions; that’s one convention
the magazine has broken.
The mise en
scene in the picture is quite obvious, Rita’s
look is urban and street influenced and is likely to appeal to a youthful
audience. Rita also wears a leather
jacket which gives connotations of rebellion as leather has often been
associated with motorcyclists and rock stars. The jacket is covered in a tattoo
pattern which further adds to the rebellious image portrayed by her outfit.
In terms of language, a lot is used to give the reader a good impression
of her.
Words used in the article we’re like ‘hottest’ and ‘bigger’. This can
suggest she is better than other artists and that we should high expectations
of her debut album.
Text: Nicki
Minaj’s name is presented in big, bold font which sort of makes statement of
how important of an artist she is in the music industry. Also how the title is
in black and pink shows the contrast between her as a person, pink representing
her feminine side and black representing her edgy side has an artist. The rest
of the text however is in small font so that it doesn’t overcrowd the main
image or the title. It’s been layered into small columns with minimal writing;
this shows me that the article was targeted at younger audience who are not of
fans of a lot of text.
Image: The
artist Nicki Minaj has taken most of the space of the DPS which makes the
reader focus on her. Her mise en scene is very bold and strikes right at you,
the zebra print clashes with the background colour making her stand out even
more. It emphasises a lot about her personality, it gives her a quirky, edgy
look. Also her outfit not only represents her quirky side, but in fact her sexy
side as the outfit is skin tight which gives an impression of the target
audience of the DPS. The contrast between colours, mise en scene and facial
expressions can connote the fact that she’s different to regular artists.
Layout:
The colours of the font that has been used on
this magazine are black grey and blue which contrast with what the R&B
artist Solange Knowles is wearing. She is wearing a short red dress and pink
stilettos which compliment her dress. The red dress shows that she is a
confident person who isn’t scared to be herself as the colour red usually
doesn’t go unnoticed by people and she is not scared to be the centre of the
attention.
The colours of the fonts that have been used on
this article not very bright or eye catchy this shows that Solange Knowles is
the core of the magazine and she is the most important thing on the magazine.
However her name is written in blue which stands out to the reader again
showing the importance of her being on the magazine. Also many other pictures have
been used of her as the background she is posing in many different ways this
indicates again the importance of her being in the magazine and she will not be
overlooked or ignored.
Target audience
The way that this double spread is presented
its seen that the target audience is towards the male specimen as the picture
is quite sexual However female readers may be envious of her and may read the
magazine to try to look like her as she seems to be the centre of the attention
and all eyes are on her.
